Core Idea
Clinical trials test interventions in people under a protocol. Early-phase trials often focus on dose, safety, and feasibility. Later-phase trials more often compare outcomes against a control or standard approach. Observational studies, case reports, preclinical studies, and registry data can be useful, but they answer different questions.
Evidence strength depends on design, endpoint, population, control, follow-up, bias, and whether results replicate.
Essential Vocabulary
- Protocol: the trial plan.
- Endpoint: the outcome being measured.
- Eligibility criteria: rules for who can enroll.
- Randomization: assignment by chance to reduce bias.
What This Does Not Mean
A trial being active does not mean the intervention is proven. A preclinical result is not clinical evidence.
