Core Idea
Tumors grow when cell production, survival, and tissue control become unbalanced. Cancer cells may respond too strongly to growth signals, ignore stop signals, avoid programmed cell death, adapt their metabolism, recruit blood supply, or interact with the immune system in ways that favor expansion.
Growth is also evolutionary. A tumor is not always a uniform mass; different subclones can compete under pressure from oxygen, nutrients, immunity, and therapy.
Essential Vocabulary
- Proliferation: cell division.
- Apoptosis: programmed cell death.
- Angiogenesis: growth of new blood vessels.
- Clonal evolution: selection among related cell populations.
What This Does Not Mean
Faster growth in a model, dish, or animal experiment does not automatically predict human outcomes.
Builder/Data Lens
Growth curves need time, measurement method, sampling bias, and endpoint clarity. A single snapshot can miss dynamics.
