Core Idea

Cancer risk is shaped by age, inherited variants, environmental exposures, infections, hormones, immune state, random errors during cell division, and social conditions that affect prevention and care. Some risks are modifiable, some are not, and some interact.

Heredity matters for a minority of cancers overall but can be very important in specific families or cancer types. Prevention can include vaccination, exposure reduction, screening programs, and public-health policy.

Essential Vocabulary

  • Risk factor: associated with higher probability.
  • Protective factor: associated with lower probability.
  • Inherited variant: DNA change passed through family.
  • Genetic counseling: professional assessment of hereditary risk.

What This Does Not Mean

Risk factors do not assign blame, and lower risk does not remove uncertainty.
