Project status
Honest snapshot of what HackCancer is — and isn't — today.
This page replaces the old "Impact metrics" / "Donate" / "Get involved" placeholders. We stopped publishing fictional numbers. When the project has real metrics worth bragging about, this page is where they will appear, with sources and dates.
Where the project is right now
| Indicator | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Public docs site | 🟢 live | hack-cancer.org via VitePress + GitHub Pages |
| English content | 🟢 in progress | core fundamentals, omics overviews, clinical & ethics topics |
| Portuguese (BR) content | 🟢 in progress | mirroring English on a rolling basis |
| References to PubMed / authoritative sources | 🟡 expanding | being added page-by-page during the 2025–2026 review pass |
Runnable examples (src/examples) | 🟡 minimal | one validated GDC quickstart; more on the roadmap |
| Reproducible pipelines | 🔴 not yet | targeted for Roadmap Phase 03 |
| Community channel beyond GitHub | 🔴 not yet | no Discord, no Slack, no newsletter — issues + PRs only |
| Donations / sponsorship | 🔴 not yet | no payment infrastructure; do not promise tiers we can't deliver |
| Scientific reviewer network | 🟡 forming | individual collaborators; no formal editorial board |
| Multi-language coverage beyond PT-BR | ⚪ not planned now | depends on contributors |
Legend: 🟢 working / 🟡 partial / 🔴 not yet / ⚪ out of current scope.
What "in progress" means
- Pages exist but are being deepened, cited, and aligned across EN ↔ PT-BR.
- Some sections still ship as stubs (12–30 lines) flagged for the next review batch.
- Numbers and statistics on individual pages should always carry a citation; if you find one without a source, that's a bug — please open an issue.
How to help today
These are real ways to contribute right now. No invented programs.
If you have 5 minutes
- Spot a typo, a broken link, or a citation that doesn't match its sentence → open an issue at github.com/hack-cancer with the page path and what's wrong.
- Suggest a missing reference for a page you know well → comment on an existing issue or open a new one with the PMID / DOI / URL.
If you have 30 minutes
- Improve a Portuguese translation that reads stiff or has European-Portuguese vocabulary slipping in → edit the file under
docs/pt-br/and send a PR. - Run the Getting started example and report whether it worked on your platform (OS, Python version) → opens a useful contributor signal.
If you have an evening
- Take one stub page (e.g. anything in
docs/experimental/ordocs/omics/) and turn it into a sourced page using the Editorial standard before opening a PR. - Curate a small dataset or notebook (well-licensed, narrowly scoped, reproducible) → propose it as an example under
src/examples.
If you're a scientist or clinician
- Review one page in your domain for accuracy, scope, and what's missing → leave comments on a PR or open an issue with the page path.
- Suggest one paper that should anchor the page → PMID + a one-sentence reason.
We will not ask for money, time, or commitment beyond what you offer. There are no donation tiers.
What we will not do
- Run a Discord without moderators.
- Promise sponsorship perks (logo placement, advisory board, etc.) without infrastructure.
- Publish a metric we cannot back with a source and a date.
- Accept content that cannot be reviewed by someone with relevant domain expertise.
- Frame ourselves as a clinical resource. See Limits & responsibility.
Where this list is updated
This page is updated when the underlying state changes. Major shifts (a real Discord, real funding, real partnerships) will be announced through the GitHub repo and reflected here on the same day.
For mid-term direction without dates, see the Roadmap.
